I will grant that a pistol grip would preclude its use, but for now they seem to work pretty well. This type of glowing report was the main reason I bought an 870 . However, mine and a number of other new owner’s experienced jamming and locking-up of the pump when attempting to extract a shell. Seems the attention-to-detail aspect has lacked and units are being shipped with small imperfections in the chamber that causes the shell to cant sideways and jam on extraction. Numerous YouTube videos demonstrate how to hone the affected area. I contacted Remington to arrange for return/repair and they balked at the idea as I was not using the recommended Remington brand ammunition.

For close-range, indoor home or self-defense, the Remington 870 Home Defense shotgun stoked with mini shells would be an excellent combination. If mini shells are not in your tactical mindset, the Remington 870 Home Defense shotgun is a very formidable tool when used with full-power standard and magnum loads. So, if you are a wood-n-steel kind of person, I can highly recommend the Remington 870 Home Defense shotgun. Even if you are not a wood-n-steel person, the synthetic Remington 870 Tactical version is an excellent choice. Due to the lack of recoil when shooting “mini shells,’ there is a lack of muzzle rise that would be attributed to full-power loads.

Their customer service was professional, but it was a little difficult to get a hold of them. Their wait times were high and sometimes the calls will drop. Because of the past malfunctions of my mossberg 500 flex, I am still going to use the Remington 870 as my main shotgun. About 3 decades ago, I spent 6 years in the Coast Guard reserves, serving as a small-boat engineer and boarding officer. When I first joined the standard shotgun was the Remington 870 with short cylinder-bore barrel and plain wood furniture. A mossberg 590 or a high quality rem 870 is nicer.

The Aguila 1.75-inch mini-shell in #1 Buck has a velocity of 1200 fps. Both should make for an excellent indoor defensive load, being light in recoil and also in generated noise. I had shot the Aguila before in my friends Mossberg 500 and the generated recoil was actually less than my Mossberg 20-gauge with #3 Buck loads. I personally love that forend that Remington is putting on these now.
Remington 870 Home Defense
I have an early ’70s model 870 Wingmaster that is the cat’s meow but for ducks, geese, clay pigeons and anything else I now turn to my Benelli Nova. If given the choice of the Benelli and a Remington on a $350 budget…. First thing you do with ANY firearm is put a coat of Renaissance Wax on it, wood metal everything you can get at. Not that I think it’s very likely you’ll break one anyway. Your pathetic bub…..shut the fuck up and go shoot.

I took it apart and looked at it, everything seemed to be in order, it is a pretty simple action. I couldn’t figure out why it would click when you cocked the action, yet it wouldn’t shoot most of the time. Older 870 inherited from dad still takes all the pheasant your dog can flush. Been reblued once and never replaced the ejector.

I did replace the buttstock pad with a softer version, but otherwise it’s stock out of the box. Now there was one issue when I first got it — every now and then I couldn’t rack it, it would seem to lock up. I called Remington and was told to rack it over and over again at home and to do so rather aggressively. Apparently something was slightly off in the manufacturing process and the Remington rep was familiar with this problem. I did as was suggested and once it was broken in it ran perfectly every time. Nothing like blowing up a target with 00 buck.

The shop swapped out the pistol grip for a standard stock. With this I can change the setup to fit what I am doing. One of the key points was that the 870 uses a two rail system for the pump which keeps it from twisting and binding while racking. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard this is the perfect home defense shotgun both online and in gun stores. As a whole, pump action shotguns can be one of the toughest to manipulate under stress. This model has no stock so it can be tricky to gauge where you’re aiming from shooting at the hip.

Some people assume that lower-priced Remington models are garbage (think about the poor reactions which the Model 770 has received…) but that is not necessarily the case. Just because something is more wallet-friendly, doesn’t mean it’s junk. Other options include a parkerized 870 Police with walnut furniture, shown here with my high polish blued version, which now has a mag extension installed. Either of these can easily be converted to a hunting shotgun by swapping the 18" barrel for a longer barrel.
A place for responsible gun owners and enthusiasts to talk about guns without the politics. Another option within the 870 family would be to find a nice used 870 Wingmaster and install an 18" barrel and mag extension. I've got an Express Tactical with poly furniture and a Police with wood. The Express works great but I've change all parts to convert it as close as possible to the Police. You can add an extension on the mag tube, if you wish to.

Also included is a rubber recoil absorbing butt pad, which is damn near required when shooting a shotgun this light — the gun weighs only a hair over seven pounds. At the top of the stock Remington has crafted in a good-sized comb that gives the shooter a solid cheek rest when aiming the gun, rounding out the fine design of the rear section of the firearm. The differences between 20 gauge and 12 gauge shotguns are already well-known and documented. When it comes to the Model 870 Express, the differences are not too many. 12 and 20 are the only gauges in which the Express is offered, but other versions of the 870 are available in 16 gauge, 28 gauge, and .410 bore. The 870 Express has 3 12-gauge options (one being the left-handed Express), and 7 20-gauge options.
The receiver is milled from a solid billet of steel for strength and durability, and the twin action bars ensure smooth, reliable non-binding action. Say what you want, there is a certain energy, a feeling of power, when you handle this kind of shotgun. More, perhaps, than handguns or other kinds of firearms. When I take this workhorse of a shotgun in my hand, it sends vibes up and down my arm.
